Small family, with 11 species in 3 genera. Currently, bonefishes are in their own order: Albuliformes . The Halosauridae and Notacanthidae families were previously classified in this order, but now, according to FishBase, given their own order Notacanthiformes. Deskripsi
Albula
The closest relatives of bonefishes are tarpon and ladyfishes in the order of Elopiformes. Bonefishes do not like tarpon because their mouth is under the muzzle rather than the tip. Like tarpons and ladyfishes, bonefishes can breathe air through a modified bladder found in brackish waters. The bonefish larvae are leptocephalic.
The slim body of the bonefish is silver, with the backs blue to green. At the top of the body there are dark lines with a ribbon that connects to the rib line. The body is rounded with a long snout that is a bit tilted. The dorsal fin and the tail are black. Bonefish vary in adult length from 40-100 cm depending on the species. The average size of bone is from 3 to 5 pounds (1-2 kg) with a Florida record to 16 pounds 3 oz (7.34 kg).
The bonefishes are brackish or saltwater fish usually living in the estuary and traveling to the sea to spawn on the lunar cycle. They feed on shallow sand and shallow mud, in benthic organisms, such as worms, mollusks, shrimp and crabs. They use a cone-shaped muzzle to root out their prey and are often seen with their tails out of the water. Bonefishes have crushed teeth on their ceilings.
Nemoossis and Pterothrissus
These genera are similar to Albula , unless they can be found in deeper waters.
