The Venus Throw is the highest roll in the game of Ancient Roman gambling strap (knucklebones). The game is played with four rectangular dice of numbers I, III, IV and VI, usually made of sheep or goat knucklebones. In Venus Throw, each talus lands on a different side, resulting in a score of 14. A gambler will throw a string from his hand, or from a small box, (called fritillus ). Thirty-five different throws are possible. While the throw of Venus is the highest, the Vulture throw (all ace) - also known as the Dogs throw - is the lowest. The Venus throw can be used to designate the master of revels.
The Venus Throw is also a novel in the Rome Sub Rosa series that was composed in ancient republican Rome by author Steven Saylor.
