Plot
A family in rural Texas found a boy, Arlis, who said he was missing. They took him to their house, fed him, and gave him a place to sleep. But the boy then let his father, Roy (James Caan), go into the house for a robbery. When they are found, Roy brutally kills the family, seen by the boy. The only survivor is a baby girl.
Time passes, and Arlis (Dennis Quaid) lives alone where he drives goods and novelty trucks to refill vending machines and arcade games at roadside shops and restaurants. Stopping at a house where a noisy party was held, he saw Kay (Meg Ryan), a woman who came out of a cake at a party and then fainted because she had showered on liquor.
Arlis finally gave him a ride home, a long journey, while continuing to do rounds. After returning home, Kay noticed that her husband Reese had sold the furniture, after losing their gambling money. He packs up the remaining items and goes with Arlis. They spend more time together and grow close.
Meanwhile, a young woman named Ginnie (Gwyneth Paltrow) is now traveling with Roy who is much older. He is a grifter who will pretend to be mourning to steal jewelry from corpses in the funeral home. Ginnie brings a wounded Roy to his estranged son, Arlis, to take care of his injury.
After passing the house where he grew up, Arlis realized that Kay was a surviving baby from a long-standing murder. Roy knows it, too. He started talking about tying the loose ends. This leads to a confrontation, and Arlis shoots Roy off. Ginnie went alone, and Kay and Arlis parted ways.
