Sesamoiditis occurs at the bottom of the foot, just behind the big toe. There are usually two sesamoid bones in each leg; sometimes sesamoids can be bipartite, meaning they each consist of two separate parts. The sesamoids are about the size of a jelly bean. The sesamoid bone acts as a fulcrum for the flexor tendon, the tendon that bends the big toe down.
Symptoms include inflammation and pain.
Sometimes the sesamoid bone is cracked. This can be difficult on X-rays, so bone scan or MRI is a better alternative.
Among those vulnerable to this disease are dancers, catchers and pitchers in baseball, soccer players, and soccer players.

Treatment in humans consists of anti-inflammatory drugs, cortisone injections, binding to paralyze the big toe, and orthotics with special accommodation to keep the pressure of the affected bone.
In horses, sesamoiditis is generally caused by excess pressure on the fetlock joint. Conformations that promote sesamoiditis include pastern length, or horse with long toes and low heels.
