Key History Grassy

Florida became a state in 1845, but the key was not formally entered until 1870 after they were surveyed by Charles F. Smith. According to locals, the key is taken from the name of an old settler around 1855, another document mentions that the key is named "Ellis Island before 1855." The early pioneers suffered from a cloud of mosquitoes and no one noticed. They live in thatched-roofed houses that are regularly trimmed by hurricanes, and cut off from civilization because the island is only navigated by boats. FEC built the railway in 1908, and brought prosperity to the area. It connects the island with civilization and opens opportunities for the tourism industry, and eases of transporting items such as pineapple, key lime, sponge, charcoal, and shark skin.

Grassy Key's first post office was appointed on August 26, 1908. He is known as Julius W. Taylor from the Crainlyn Post Office. The island's original name was Crainlyn after the Crain family. The Crain family was the owner of Grassy Key land before it was incorporated into Florida. Julius W Taylor was the first person known to advertise tourism to the Grassy Key area. He advertises to the Jacksonville area that 'if you suffer from heat in Jacksonville, come to the Grassy Key where the Gulf wind and the wind blow hard'.

In 1925, the first highway was equipped with a ferry landing to complete a 40 mile distance between the Lower Matcombe and Key West keys. With the addition of a highway running through the Grassy Key Edge's Edmond's Ed Neff's Lunch Room was built in 1935 complete with a gas station to accommodate travelers who can now go to Key West rather than board a ferry. The highway is nicknamed the Overseas Road.

1935 was the first recorded year with a catastrophic storm. This storm swept the lower part of Overseas Highway, destroyed the ferry station, and washed the train tracks into the sea. There are victims, but the exact numbers are unknown and not well documented. Most of the victims were World War I veterans housed in tents while they built highway bridges abroad. These veterans were hired to complete the Overseas Highway.

With the redevelopment of the Upper Keys, the train tracks were abandoned, and telephone lines were entered around 1938.

During World War II, the Outer Highway was upgraded and named AS-1. Improvements made to Navy Support Services and unlock more previously Unreachable Down Keys.

The Dolphin Research Center

In the 1940s Milton Santini and his wife Virginia opened the Porpoise Santini Training School. Before opening a training school, Milton is a commercial fisherman who catches dolphins for public and private aquariums. Milton is very concerned with these animals and even goes as far as bringing them into his home during a very menacing storm. He keeps them alive by keeping them wet with a wet towel until the storm passes.

Milton found the ability to train dolphins after he broke his back. For physical therapy he will sit in a chair near one of his homes, and squeeze a black rubber ball. After dropping him one day, Mitzi, one of the new untrained dolphins, picked up the ball for her, creating a game for both of them.

Mitzi went through the game and further training; then Mitzi would be known as the Flipper of the film in 1963. Mitzi died in 1972, and a large memorial was placed on the ground shortly thereafter. Milton sold a training school shortly after Mitzi's death to Wombetco Corporation, dubbed the Flipper Training School at school. In 1983 Jayne and Armando Rodriguez opened the Dolphin Research Center as a nonprofit organization. The Dolphin Research Center is still open today at mile marker # 59 and that is the main attraction at Grassy Key. A
