Production
Fox renewed Bones for the last 12-episode season on February 25, 2016. This season was originally announced to debut in the fall, but Fox delayed its premiere until January 2017. Former series Eric Millegan, who returned in the season finals 11, continuing his role as Zack Addy in the last season. This season features the return of former recurring characters, including Eddie McClintock as Tim "Sully" Sullivan, who reappears during the second season, and Stephen Fry as Gordon Wyatt, who makes guest appearances in seasons two, four and five. Betty White reprises her season 11 role as Dr. Beth Mayer in the tenth episode, while veteran actor Ed Asner and guest star Hal Holbrook in the third episode. The filming of the season, and the entire series, closes on December 15, 2016.

The twelfth and last season of Bones was released in DVD (subtitle "The Last Chapter") in region 1 on June 13, 2017. The collection includes all 12 episodes of the 12th season and special features including reel jokes and featurette "Back to Lab: A Bone Retrospective".
