Bone morphogenetic protein 3 , also known as osteogenin , is a protein in humans encoded by the BMP3 gene.
The proteins encoded by this gene are members of the growth factor of beta-superfamily transformation. This, like other morphogenetic bone proteins (BMPs) is known for its ability to induce bone and cartilage development. This is a disulfide-related homodimer. This negatively regulates bone density. BMP3 is an antagonist for other BMPs in osteogenic progenitor differentiation. It is highly expressed in a cracked network.

Cancer
BMP3 is hypermethylated in many cases of colorectal cancer (CRC) and hence along with other hypermethylated genes, can be used as a biomarker to detect early CRCs.
