History
The owner of Scotty's Steak House in Springfield, New Jersey claims to have discovered the dish in the 1970s. This dish was popularized in the United States when it appeared as "Bloomin 'Onion", a charter feature of Outback Steakhouse when the national chain opened in 1988. Usually served with a typical restaurant sauce dressing.
Although the association is implied with Australian cuisine because of the Outback Steakhouse brand, this dish is virtually unknown in Australia (like the Outback Steakhouse chain itself).
The dish, with the name Awesome Blossom, is also a very popular part of the Chile menu until it was removed in 2001.
From June 21, 2016 to August 2, 2016, Outback Steakhouse presents a limited variant of Bloomin 'Onion: the Loaded Bloomin' Onion.
