Biography
Initial life
Adamson was born on Moss Side, Manchester, England. He read comic books from an early age. At school he immersed himself in art, music and film and produced his first song - "Brain Pain" - at the age of 10. His musical tastes range from Alice Cooper to Motown to David Bowie.
Career
After leaving school, Adamson drifted into graphic design while attending Stockport Art College but stopped thereafter, preferring to plunge into a punk rock scene that exploded in the late 1970s. He joined the band former Buzzcocks singer Howard Devoto to play the bass guitar, with whom he scored a single chart, "Shot by Both Sides"; in late 1977, he also joined Buzzcocks, as a temporary replacement for Garth Smith. He plays on all Magazine albums and contributes to Devoto's solo album and the next band, Luxuria. She also contributed to the studio-based Visage band, playing on the first two ensemble albums, Visage and The Anvil .
After Magazine broke up, Adamson worked with another Buzzcock, Pete Shelley, before joining Nick Cave and Bad Seeds, featuring four of their albums: From Her to Eternity The Firstborn Is Dead , Kicking Against Pricks and Your Funeral, My Trial . After a stint with the band and a European tour with Iggy Pop in 1987, he went solo, released EP, The Man with the Golden Arm in 1988, and his first solo album, Moss Side Story , next year, "soundtrack" for no-noir film. The album combines news broadcasts and sound effects samples and features guest musicians Marcia Schofield (from The Fall), Diamanda Galas, and former colleagues from Bad Bad. Adamson's second solo album is the current movie soundtrack - Carl Colpaert's Delusion , and he will continue to provide the soundtrack for some other movies.
Adamson's third album, Soul Murder , was chosen to be the Mercury Music Award in 1992.
His solo work is largely influenced by John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, and Ennio Morricone, while his later works include jazz, electronica, soul, funk, and dub-styles.
In 1996, Adamson contributed to the AIDS-Benefit Album, Offbeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip, produced by the Red Hot Organization. His own album of the year, Oedipus Schmoedipus , reached # 51 on the UK Albums Charts. This will be included in the 1001 Album List You Should List Before You Die , along with Moss Side Story .
In 2002, Adamson left his long-term label, Mute Records, and started his own production house, Central Control International. In 2006, he released the Alien on the Sofa , first for the trail of Central Control International, to gain critical acclaim. Back To The Cat , the second album for the label, was released in March 2008.
In 2007 it was announced that Magazine would be returning to the concert in 2008. Adamson took part in the same line-up of the band that recorded Secondhand Daylight, with the exception of John McGeoch, replaced by members of Apollo 440, Noko. However, Adamson has since withdrawn from reunions and new recordings.
On August 27, 2010, Adamson released "Rag and Bone", as a digital download and as a 12-inch record. He then released a studio album, I'll Set You Free , on January 30, 2012.
Adamson rejoined Bad Seeds for the release of their 2013 album, Push the Sky Away . He played bass on several songs and also toured with the band on drums and keyboards to fill in for the sick Thomas Wydler.

Instruments
In the earliest Real Life Magazine video, Adamson plays Rickenbacker JG, (though probably a 4001 or 4003 model) and on Secondhand Daylight, Gibson EB-3. However, his main bass during Magazine was Ovation Magnum 2. For the 2008 Magazine concert, he alternated between Ovation, Fender Artist and Fender Jaguar Bass. He often uses the Chorus Boss unit on his bass, giving a slightly processed sound that heavily imitated in the UK rock scene of the 1980s.
Legacy
In his autobiography, It's Very Easy (And Other Lies) , Duff McKagan of Guns N 'Roses says he is influenced by bands driven by bass like Barry Adamson in Magazine.
