Histori
Mayaguana was inhabited by Lucaya before the arrival of Spain after 1492. After Lucai was last taken to Hispaniola by the Spaniards in the early 16th century, the island remained unoccupied until 1812, when people began migrating from Turkey and the Caicos Islands, which lies about 100 km 62 mi) southeast.
The Brazilian historian Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen in 1824 suggested that Mayaguana was Guanahani, the first island visited by Christopher Columbus in his discovery in America. His theory found little support. Mayaguana apparently is the name Lucayan (meaning "Midwestern Lesser Land") for the island.

During the NASA Apollo Mercury Project and program, the US space program has a missile tracking station at Mayaguana Airport now. The station was used to help keep astronauts on track. Mayaguana Airport was built by US Army Engineers connected to the US Air Force. The airport was built as a foundation for jets that will follow missiles fired from Cape Canaveral. Real time sightings and photography are the best technology when observing missile flights.
The Bahamas recently agreed to work with American investors, MMC, to turn Mayaguana into a "free trade zone," complete with tourism development around 14% of the island. Actually, this is 14% of the total land area but basically most of the coastal area. The proposal was responded to by moderate resistance by Mayaguanian, who was looking forward to economic expansion but was not sure what changes would occur. This development is still in the planning stage and is trying to maintain the island's nature as a quiet eco-tourism destination while still creating sustainable economic growth.
Mayaguana is one of only a few Bahamas islands that still defend their Lucayan real name. Other islands prefer to turn into non-nativist names.

Culture
In 2016, Mayaguana held its first annual screen festival called All Mayaguana Regatta. The festival focuses on sailing competitions, food, art and music. Conchfest was also held as a substitute for Mud's Bay Homecoming in early August.
The most developed Bahamas, Mayaguana has never really seen great growth especially as the government takes little interest in the economy. However, the government has provided several local residents with entry-level positions in various government offices. Others make a living by fishing and farming.
Considered the most remote Bahamas island, Mayaguana uses the state boat system as the main form of import and export. Mayaguana is visited once a week for delivery and pick-up by M/V Lady Mathilda.
Food
Mayaguana is known for its fresh seafood. Marine life regularly captured for commercial purposes including snails, groupers, prickly lobsters, snapper, and tuna. Marlin and bone fish found in the waters of the Bahamas are lured for sporting activities only.
Environment
Mayaguana is known for its fertile land, which is good for farming, and its wood field. Dry hardwoods of the Bahamian forest, common lignum-vitae ( Guaiacum officinale ), and lignum-vitae holywood ( G. Sanctum ) can be found throughout the island. The island is home to several government reserves.
As the southeastern island of the Commonwealth of Bahamas, Mayaguana borders to the east with deep waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Many undersea reefs are found offshore, as well as shipwrecks.
Mayaguana is home to the Bahamian hutia, a rodent considered extinct until the mid-1960s, as well as the Bahamas flamingo, iguana bartsch, plovers, terns, and osprey. Nested turtles can be found throughout the northern part of the undeveloped island. Around 118 species of birds are found on the island, including two large brown booby colonies.
Tourism â ⬠<â â¬
Mayaguana remains one of the purest and untouched islands in the Bahamas. But the island - home to beautiful beaches, unique wildlife and world-class fishing - has never fully achieved its development potential. Most tourists who visit, do so for the essence of a pure island. Visitors can also enjoy scuba diving, bonefishing, snorkeling, white crown dove hunting and bird watching. The eastern part of the island is a popular area for people interested in crabs (catch crabs of local islands) off-trail bikers.
Ecotourism is also a growing spectrum. Booby Cay is home to hundreds of native species of iguanas just for Mayaguana. There are also interesting species of boobs that are also found on a separate cay on the northern side of Mayaguana. Blackwood Point, located in Pirates Well, where people will find Bahamian flamingos throughout the year.
The island is accessible by Mayaguana Airport (MYG), located in southeast Abraham's Bay and visited by Bahamasair as well as private planes. The new construction will take place at Mayaguana Airport before the fourth quarter of 2017.
