Lamina dura is a compact bone that is located near the periodontal ligament, in the tooth socket. The dura lamina surrounds the tooth socket and provides an attachment surface with the Sharpey fiber from the perforated periodontal ligament. In the x-ray lamina dura will appear as a radiophone line that surrounds the root of the teeth. A whole dura lamina appears as a healthy periodontium. Lamina dura, along with the periodontal ligament, plays an important role in bone remodeling and thus in the orthodontic dental movement.
Below the lamina dura is a bleachable cancellous bone. Trabeculae is a small bony spicula that crosses the cancellous bone that makes it look like a sponge. This trabekula separates the cancellous bone into small compartments containing blood-producing marrow.
