Recording and production

After Get Behind Me Demon , Icky Thump marks the return of punk, garage rock and blues influences known as the band. In addition, the album introduced Scottish folk music, avant-garde, trumpet, and bagpipes into the formula, while simultaneously reintroducing the older characteristics like the first studio recording of the original White Stripes "Little Cream Soda".

Icky Thump was recorded and mixed entirely in analogue at Blackbird Studio Nashville by Joe Chiccarelli. According Chiccarelli in an interview with HitQuarters, the band has been practicing and demo about half the album, with the rest conceived in the studio. The album took nearly three weeks to record - the longest album White Stripes. Records are different from previous albums in White that have the comparative luxury of recording to a 16-track analog rather than the usual 8-track. In addition, Chiccarelli said: "We spent more time than he was accustomed to experimenting and trying different things on the album, whether it's a different way to record drums or vocals, or different settings, or cut picks together." The trumpeter of Regulo Aldama, who appeared in "Conquest", was discovered by Jack White at a local Mexican restaurant.

Jack White said that the album would appeal to fans of the self-titled debut band, showing the garage rock sound being stripped. A statement on the band's official website (which is falsely associated with "Kitayna Ireyna Tatanya Kerenska Alisof" from Moscow Bugle , references to film Batman 1966) cutely claims that:

Entertainment Weekly's website has an interview with Michel Gondry in which he says he will direct the video for "I Slowly Turn You On". He mentioned the idea for the video. Gondry also said that the video idea came first, and after mentioning the idea to Jack White, White wrote the song to fulfill the idea.

On May 30, 2007, the Chicago Q101 radio station broadcasted the entire album without the band's permission. Jack calls to the station and reacts angrily about those who play it. There has been speculation that labels supply albums to stations to promote their release. In the liner notes of Icky Thump, "Electra" is thanked in the second row, right after God. According to Ben Blackwell, Jack White's niece, this is not addressed to radio DJ, Electra, but to a pet Jack and Meg White first.

The White Stripes announced the completion of Icky Thump on February 28, 2007. The title is derived from "ecky thump", a response to everyday Lancashire conversations, popularized by an episode of the 1970s British comedy series The Goodies . At Then with Jools Holland (aired June 1, 2007) Jack linked the album's name to use as an appeal by his wife, who is from Lancashire. He added that deliberate spelling errors were to make it easier for American audiences to identify. The liner notes for Icky Thump also suggest spelling variations due to concerns over copyright infringement.

The theme of the Pearly Kings and Queens costume that the band used for this album was the traditional Cockney outfit, somewhat at odds with the Northern dialect of the title.

Promotions and releases

The artwork features Jack and Meg album dress up as Pearlies.

To promote Icky Thump before it was released, the band distributed a specially designed box and preview track of the recording via Ice Cream Man. The ice cream promotion focuses on Coachella, Sasquatch and Bonnaroo festivals and peaks at the band's launch event on June 20, 2007 at the former West Hollywood Tower Records site on Sunset Blvd, for a while, Icky Thump. Recording.

In addition to being released on CD and 180 grams of vinyl, the band released an album on a limited edition 512 MB USB drive designed by British artist Stanley Chow. There are two versions, one of which describes Jack, the other describes Meg. The emphasis is limited to 3,333 of each, and sent weeks of US release. Each drive contains an album in an Apple lossless format.

The 180g vinyl edition contains an alternate version of "Icky Thump" and "Rag and Bone". "Icky Thump" is a slightly different mix with the digital version and is also edited to 14 seconds shorter. "Rag and Bone" is also a different mix but otherwise contains very different vowels for each verse (probably original guitar vocals and no vowels from Meg) and lost harmony from the last chorus.

The sound quality of the digital version has been criticized for being overpowered and with excessive peak restrictions. Critics claim these results in clipping or "digital distortion" which can be heard as crunching, especially during a bass drum hit. The vinyl version is controlled by Steve Hoffman.

A special mono blend Icky Thump is available on 180 grams of vinyl for a short time to Third Man Vault Premium Account customers.

Reception

The album received critical acclaim, with an overall average score of 80 out of 100 in Metacritic. Barry Nicolson with the English magazine NME wrote, " Icky Thump is brilliant, there is no other way." Commenting on the album "a fuller voice and a laid-back luxury flight," Heather Phares of AllMusic said "Icky Thump" is a mature album, but away from stodgy, "and it's" very fun to hear the band play. "Jody Rosen, writing for Blender , called the album" the sound of a band that does not stretch out so much as digging: digging deeper into the clay soil they know so well. " In one of the more negative reviews, Josh Tyrangiel of Time commented, "The White lines are too weird and talented to be boring, but it sounds they may be a bit bored." In the end giving the album 3.5 out of 5 stars and delivering (A-) on his website, Robert Christgau, with Rolling Stone , summed up the album back in this way "Although the new construction is not consistent as it should be , their noise remains with you, and what that means is the noise itself. "He added," Like Led Zeppelin's heroine sometimes, Jack White built a monument, they fit in for a fascinating visit, but they have no place to stay. "

On December 6, 2007, Icky Thump was nominated for four Grammy Awards 2007: Best Alternative Album, Best Box Package or Special Limited Edition, Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Show by Duo or Group with Vocals for singles "Icky Thump", won Best Alternative Album and Best Rock Performance by Duo or Group With Vocal. Q Magazine named Icky Thump as the 2nd best album of 2007. Subsequently, the album placed # 17 on Rolling Stone ' list of the Top 50 Albums of 2007.
