The Haversian Channel (sometimes the Havers channel , named after British physician Clopton Havers) is a series of microscopic tubes in the outermost part of the bone called cortical bone allowing the blood vessels and nerves to perform travel through them. Each canal of haversia generally contains one or two capillaries and nerve fibers. Channels are formed by a concentric layer called lamellae. The haversia canal surrounds the blood vessels and nerve cells throughout the bone and communicates with the bone cells (contained in space within a solid bone matrix called lacunae) through a connection called canaliculi. This unique arrangement is conducive to mineral salt deposits and storage that provide bone tissue strength.
In mature solid bones, most of the lamellae form concentric rings around larger longitudinal canals (about 50 Ã, μm in diameter) within the bone tissue. These canals are called haversia canals. The Haversian channel is contained in osteons, which are usually arranged along the long axis of the bone parallel to the surface. The surrounding canals and lamellae (8-15) form a functional unit, called the haversian or osteon system.
