Patio of Pots: How to Make Bone Meal Fertilizer

Feeding bone is a mixture of finely ground and coarse animal bones and home-cut waste products. It is used as an organic fertilizer for plants and as a nutritional supplement for animals. As a slow release fertilizer, bone meal is mainly used as a source of phosphorus and protein.

Usage

Dietary supplements

Eating bones, along with a variety of other foods, especially meat flour, is used as a dietary/mineral supplement for livestock. It is used to feed monogastric animals with bone meal from ruminants, and vice versa, to prevent the spread of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or "mad cow disease". Proper heat control can reduce salmonella contaminants.

Eating bones is often used as a human dietary calcium supplement. Research in the 1980s found that many bone meal preparations were contaminated with lead and other toxic metals, and were no longer recommended as a source of calcium.

Fertilizer

As a fertilizer, the ratio of N-P-K (Nitrogen-Phosphorus-Potassium) of bone meal can vary greatly, depending on the source. From low 3-15-0 to as high as 2-22-0. , although some of the steamed bones have N-P-Ks 1-13-0. Eating bones is also an excellent source of calcium, but it does not provide enough nitrogen to benefit the plant. Plants can only get phosphorus from bone meal if the soil pH is below 7.0 (acid soil), according to a recent Colorado State University study.

Mycorrhiza

Organic fertilizers typically require the use of various fungi in the soil to make nutrients in fertilizers bioavailable for crops. For plants that require phosphorus, mycorrhizal fungi penetrate the roots and break down phosphorus-containing compounds to facilitate absorption and utilization, and in turn the plant supplies mycorrhiza with amino acids and sugars.

History

This process was first proposed by Justus von Liebig (dissolving animal bones in sulfuric acid) around 1840 and was first used in England by Rev James Robertson at Ellon, Aberdeenshire in 1841.

In 19th-century Europe, large-scale production and international trade in bone waste were considered essential for agricultural development.
