The Australasia Journal of Bone & amp; Joint Medicine (originally titled Australasian Journal of Musculoskeletal Medicine ) is a magazine presented in the style of a scientific journal, published by Elsevier, but founded and funded by Merck pharmaceutical company. The publication began in 2002, and the last edition appeared in 2005. According to The Scientist :
Merck paid an undisclosed amount to Elsevier to produce some of the volume of Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine, a publication that has the appearance of a peer-reviewed medical journal, but contains only reprinted or summarized articles. - largely presenting data that benefits Merck's product - which appears to act only as a marketing tool without corporate sponsor disclosure.
The publication is not included in the MEDLINE literature database and does not have its own website.
In May 2009, Elsevier admitted that a series of similar industry-sponsored publications had been produced, and that "high standards for disclosure are not followed in this regard". In an official statement, Elsevier Health Division CEO Michael Hansen acknowledged that the practice was "unacceptable", and expressed regret over the publication. Merck denies the claim that the article in it is a ghost written by Merck and has stated that the articles were reprinted from medical journals reviewed by colleagues.
Some medical experts state that their names are included in the Honorary Editorial Board of the Australasian Journal of Bone and Joint Medicine without their knowledge and consent.
There are six such "industrial-sponsored" such publications issued by Elsevier without a correct disclosure of their nature, and which have outstanding appearances from legitimate independent journals. The six publications involved are
- Australasian Journal of General Practice
- Australasian Journal of Neurology
- Australasian Journal of Cardiology
- Australasian Journal of Clinical Pharmacy
- Australasian Journal of Cardiovascular Medicine
- Australasia Journal of Bone & amp; Joint Medication
