Andrew Rosen is an American retail executive. Currently C.E.O. Theory, Inc., a New York-based clothing retailer he founded in 1997, Rosen is a third generation garment industry entrepreneur. Rosen has served for many years as a judge at the CFDA Fashion Awards, and as a mentor to many of her finalists. Rosen has been a major investor in a number of emerging American designers, including Alice Olivia, J Brand, rag & amp; bones, and Proenza Schouler.

Kehidupan awal

Rosen grew up in the garment industry of New York City. His first job was at a knitting factory on Long Island, operating a punch card. His grandfather, Arthur Rosen, a Russian immigrant and a skilled garment expert, founded the Puritan Gown Company in 1910 in Waltham, Massachusetts. His son, Carl, took over business in the 1950s, and moved it to the department store district of New York City. Carl Rosen changed the company's name to Puritan Fashions Corporation.

In 1977, Carl Rosen produced the first designer jeans, licensed by Calvin Klein. Barry Schwartz, Klein's business partner at the time, told the Wall Street Journal: Carl proposed giving us $ 1 for a pair of $ 18.75 jeans sold for $ 40 retail... we ended up selling 15 million pairs a year at the peak. Purists continue to license merchandise with other designers, including clothing lines with Diane von Furstenberg. With Carl Rosen's death in 1983, the company's sales reached nearly $ 300 million.

Company career

Andrew Rosen dropped out of college after a year at the University of Miami. At 26, Rosen took over as C.E.O. Puritan after his father's death, but oversaw a misplaced profit. Calvin Klein and Barry Schwartz acquired the company after a year, inviting Rosen to remain executive, and four years later named him president of the company. Rosen quit the Puritan to work as C.E.O. Anne Klein for six years. According to New Yorker , he was fired from Anne Klein "because of a dispute over brand strategy". In 1997, Rosen partnered with designer Elie Tahari to discover Theory. The most important innovation of Rosen and Tahari style is the introduction of technically advanced stretch fabrics to the modern business silhouette. The Wall Street Journal writes that "Rosen is betting that he can build a business with pants that are not good, good trousers and without auteur behind them, and he won big." In 2003, the company had annual sales of more than $ 200 million (1), and Rosen and Tahari sold the label to Japanese license holders Link Holdings.

Rosen kept an 11 percent stake in the business, however, which he sold after his parent company brought public Theory in 2005. Tahari accused him of being deceived about the terms of the purchase, and sued unsuccessfully for shares in the proceeds of the IPO. In 2010, Rosen hired Belgian designer Olivier Theyskens as creative director of Theory. This move is intended to keep Theory competitive with brands such as Alexander Wang and Phillip Lim 3.1, making a breakthrough in the 'contemporary' market with a collection of critically acclaimed designers. Theysken left Theory in June 2014, after his capsule collection for the company failed to drive significant sales. Rosen replaced him with former chief designer of Theory Lisa Kulson.

Support for New York City garment manufacturing

Rosen has been a major supporter of the NYEDC Fashion Manufacturing Initiative, which aims to strengthen the garment sector in New York City by offering grants, training, and resource sharing for clothing companies. Rosen own Theory, Inc. managing a garment factory on Little West Twelfth Street, close to headquarters, for sample garment production.

In 2014, Theory made 30 percent of its manufacturing in New York, and Rosen has expressed interest in bringing more. According to New Yorker , the New York garment district supported over 200,000 jobs fifty years ago. In 2013, this number drops to about 21,000. The clothing industry does not have to go to the old volume, Rosen says. The goal is for the quality and integrity of our industry to be maintained. Rosen sees new industry growth coming from the manufacturing of luxury clothing, a sector that has migrated from New York to cities like Paris and Milan.

Personal life

Rosen married Jenny Dyer, a former decorator. He has two children, Austin and Ashley, from a previous marriage to Adrian Mottola. Austin Rosen has worked at Theory and rag & amp; bone, and established the music management company Electric Feel.

Rosen is a lifetime horse race enthusiast and has over fifty racehorses. His crown horse's crown was the winner of the 1984 Breeders Cup.
