Practice Karung guni common in Singapore. The practitioner-the practitioner is a modern form of rag and bone men who visit home from home. They can walk along the corridor (if a certain HDB area has a covered parking lot) or for a particular HDB plant where the car park is just below the HDB block, running through the lower parking lot while honking. However, around the landed property, they can wander around with trucks with horns attached to it, instead of going door to door. They make excursions in carts, collect old newspapers and other unwanted items. These will be resold on special markets and eventually recycled or reused. "Bagung Guni" is a Malay phrase for gunny sack, used in the past to hold a newspaper. Sacked gunmen will haul heavy sacks on their backs as they walk around to collect. Today, most of them use hand trucks instead.

These people can be distinguished by the use of horns or (rarely) hand bells and screams " sack guni, poh zhua gu sa kor, lei-lio pie, dian si ki... " ("Cain and bones, newspapers and old clothes, spoiled radio, television "in Singlish and Hokkien languages) when making their rounds. Depending on the person, the nominal fee is paid for the number of newspapers or unwanted items being sold.

The gun bag industry is made very profitable because of the densely populated urban nature of Singapore, where hundreds of housing units of public housing Housing Development Board are located in one block, with often a dozen blocks in every housing. This gives the men a big gun of access to the source of scrap. There are stories reported about rag-to-riches, gunmen who have become millionaires only from the sack business. Today, however, the competition is usually too big.

Used goods in good condition purchased by gunmen are usually resold at flea markets like Sungei Road, although recently some have begun registering additional items at an online auction. Since sacked gunmen are motivated by the resale value of these materials in the market, there are also reported cases where some collectors have been selective in what will be received from households, although they may still be recyclable or can be recycled reused.

At the beginning of the 21st century, sacked gunmen face competition from government recycling and charitable initiatives that directly collect from the population for recycling. Sacked gunmen have been prosecuted for attempting to steal used goods from green recycling bags that are placed outside the home unit for collection.

Perubahan dalam industri

Since the 21st century, there has been a resurgence of interest in this particular industry with younger blood coming to robbery. The industry seems to be turning to an on-demand model where the convenience, incentives, and reduction of contamination are the main focus. Some websites that provide such services include http://www.karang-guni.com, http://www.recyclingpoint.com.sg/, http://www.kgs.com and http://www. sct.sg/where items can be recycled only with calls.

Spelling error

The phrase "bag guni" is often misinterpreted as "karang guni". This is not true as "coral" as in "coral" is the Malay word for coral, "coral" itself means "to write", while "sack" means sack or bag.
