Gremlins 2: The New Batch is a 1990 American comedy horror film, and a sequel to the 1984 movie Gremlins . The film is directed by Joe Dante and written by Charles S. Haas, with a creature design by Rick Baker. It stars Zach Galligan, Phoebe Cates, John Glover, Robert Prosky, Haviland Morris, Dick Miller, Jackie Joseph, Robert Picardo and Christopher Lee; In addition, the film features Tony Randall and Frank Welker who provide sound for two gremlins. The story continues the adventures of Gizmo creatures (once again voiced by Howie Mandel), who cultivated many small monsters when wet. In the first film, Gizmo's children ran through small fictional towns. In Gremlins 2 , Gizmo multiplies in a skyscraper in New York City. Thus, these new creatures posed a serious threat to the city if they could leave the building, and many of these stories involved the efforts of human characters to prevent this catastrophe.

Like the first movie, Gremlins 2 is a live action horror comedy film; however, Dante seeks to take the sequel in a new anarchist direction. The film is intended to look more like a cartoon and less dark than the original, and its hardness is quite similar to slapstick. There are also a number of parodies from other movies and stories, especially the Gremlins themselves, as well as movies , The Wizard of Oz , Marathon Man and The Phantom of the Opera . Like the first film, critical responses vary. Some critics who think the first movie is too dark give Gremlins 2 a better review, but receive a colder welcome from fans who think otherwise.

Plot

After the death of the owner. Wing, mogwai Gizmo became a guinea pig of scientists at Clamp Enterprises, a state-of-the-art office building in Manhattan, run by eccentric billionaire Daniel Clamp. At the mercy of the lead researcher Dr. Catheter, Gizmo is saved by his friend Billy Peltzer and his fiancé, Kate, who both work for the company. Clamp befriended Billy after being impressed by his skills in concept design, also sparking Marla Bloodstone's superior interest in Billy. Gizmo is left at the office, where water spills on his head and raises four new mogwai (George, Lenny, Mohawk and Daffy) which then locks the Gizmo in the vent. They eat after midnight, turning into gremlins.

After Gizmo finds a way out of the vents, Mohawk tortures him by hitting him, shocking him with an electric wire, putting it into a copier, putting a Velcro strip on him and tearing it, and eventually bumping him with a toy train while other Gremlins cause a sprinkler to go and spawn a gremlin soldier which threw the building into chaos. Billy tries to lure gremlins into the lobby, where the sun will kill them; after Billy briefs Clamp on gremlin knowledge, Clamp comes out through a secret tunnel to cover the front of the building in a gigantic sheet to trick the creature. Gremlins devoured the serum in the laboratory; someone becomes a smart Brain Gremlin, who plans to use a "genetic sunblock" serum to immunize them into the sun. One gremlin turns into a woman, while a third becomes pure electricity and is trapped in Clamp's answering machine by Billy. While "Grandfather Fred" filmed the chaos on camera with the help of a Japanese tourist named Mr. Katsuji.

Murray Futterman, Billy's neighbor from Kingston Falls who visited New York City, met a hybrid bat gremlin and covered it with cement, effectively turning it into a gargoyle. Murray realizes that he's not crazy and he has to help; when Clamp escapes from the building using his secret route, Murray uses it to sneak in to help Billy. Billy and head of Forster's security team, but Forster is being followed and pursued by a female gremlin. Mohawk finishes torturing Gizmo and devouring the spider serum, turning into a half-gremlin hybrid, half a terrible spider. He attacks Kate and Marla, but Gizmo confronts Mohawk and kills him with a bottle of white bottle. Outside, a thunderstorm foils Clamp's plans as the gremlins gather in the foyer of the building, singing "New York, New York".

Billy drew up a plan to kill the GREMLIN army: Mr. Futterman sprayed the army with water while Billy released the electric gremlin, shocked them. Clamp the charges with the police and press, but see the battle over; he was very happy with the end result he gave to Billy, Kate, Fred, and Marla promotions and hired Mr. Katsuji as a cameraman. Billy and Kate then return home with Gizmo. Forster told Clamp that he was stuck on the highest floor of the building. The female gremlin cornered her and persuaded her to marry her.

Looney Tunes segment

Along with the main plot, there is an animation by Chuck Jones in the film featuring Bugs Bunny's character Looney Tunes, Daffy Duck and Porky Pig (now voiced by Jeff Bergman, due to the death of Mel Blanc, the original voice actor). Jones actually stopped animating before returning to work on Gremlins 2 . Dante explained the animation at the beginning of the film was meant to "set an anarchist tone."

The first scene appears at the beginning of the movie, and features a classic "Looney Tunes" opening card, which causes people to think of it as a short cartoon that usually plays before the movie begins; However, when Bugs Bunny appears through the ring on top of the Warner Brothers shield, Daffy interrupts the intro, and steals the shield from Bugs. Daffy tries to re-create the opening with her in place of Bugs Bunny, but the overshoot shield, causing the entire title card to fall apart. Daffy hands over the stars, claiming that since she will not be starring in cartoons, they might as well jump straight into the movie. Bugs are willing to do so, and rotate the Daffy screen off like a rotating top for the movie title appears.

DVD and Blu-ray include shorter versions of shorter cartoons. In it, Daffy was told by Bugs that he had been promoted to executive and then assigned to write the title of his film. When Daffy mistakenly wrote the title Gremlins 2 as "Gremlin Stew", Bugs corrected his error. Daffy then attempts to rename the movie The Return of Super-Daffy Meets Gremlins 2 Part 6: The Movie , but Bugs rejects this for too long, turning it back into Gremlins 2 ( given in official logo font). Daffy then quit his new job and Bugs decided to add a subtitle, saying it looked "a little skimpy". This material was removed from the movie because the early audiences were expecting a live-action movie and were confused by the long animated sequence.

Throughout the film cover credits, Daffy appears in a sporadic frame and spews out sarcastic remarks. The last scene appears after the credits, and again features the Looney Tunes ring. This time, Bork Porky came out of the circle and said "Th-th-th-it-it-it-it-it, everything!" However, Daffy Duck interrupts again and takes over. After Daffy said the slogan, the back of Warner Bros. shield, with the words, "Animated Title Written & Directed by Chuck Jones (with Chuck Jones's signature)", destroyed it. He peeked his head to the left side and said, "Faded," and the segment ends.

Production

Original Gremlins is a financial success, and Warner Bros. asked director Joe Dante to create a live sequel. Dante refused, because he saw Gremlins have the right end, and thus the sequel would only mean profitable. In addition, the original film is a tax experience for Dante, and he wants to continue. Working at Gremlins 2 continues without him, because the studio is approaching various directors and writers. The story line is considered including sending gremlins to cities like Las Vegas or even Mars. After these ideas failed, the studio returned to Dante, who agreed to make the sequel after receiving a rare appointment to have full creative control over the film; he also received a triple budget from the original film. Dante later admitted that at this point too much time has passed between the films, so it may reduce the Gremlins 2 ' s appeal.

Gremlins 2 was shot in New York in June 1989, the film was released in 1990, and as the filmmaker later noted, this is the time when cable television, genetics, and frozen yogurt became more common and influential. This left a mark on Gremlins 2 . Gremlins 2 is exaggerating what can be seen on cable television at the time, though as recorded by the filmmaker in 2002, the humor may be lost to today's audiences. Cable television then evolved to provide the same variation. Genetics in 1990 is reflected in lab scenes in Gremlins 2, and frozen yogurt is what mogwai eats after midnight.

Planning

With greater control over the film, Dante devised a project that came to be called "one of those unusual studio photos, ever." Dante includes some material that he believes that Warner Bros. will not allow if they do not want a sequel to Gremlins . Allowed to violate a number of rules in filmmaking, he also later claimed it was a film in which he had put most of his personal influence. Dante imagines Gremlins 2 as the satire Gremlins and the sequel in general. Another basic description of Gremlins 2 is that, as Dante says, an hour into the movie becomes "very cartoonish."

The recommended scriptwriter, Charlie Haas, takes to the basic storyline project of moving gremlins to New York City, and he also envisioned the head of the company (the Clamp character) who became Billy's boss and at the center of a new disaster. When Warner Bros executives were concerned about the cost of depicting gremlins that attacked the entire city, Haas found the idea to limit the action in Daniel Clamp's "smart building". Haas also incorporated a lot of material in his manuscript that proved too complicated to produce, including having a cow-hamster hybrid running on a treadmill in the laboratory.

In keeping with Dante's desire to mock the original film, this sequel has several references to self-reference meta and humor. This includes a cameo appearance by film critic Leonard Maltin. She holds a copy of the original home video of Gremlins and denounces, as she has in reality; However, his harsh words were cut short when gremlins pounced on him. Partly for this scene, one academic named Dante "one of the great jokes of contemporary movies."

Also, when Billy tries to explain the rules regarding mogwai to the staff in the building, the staff finds them quite unreasonable and mocks interrogating Billy on their exact meaning; at one point consider a mogwai thought experiment in a plane crossing a time zone. This scene stems from the fact that the filmmakers themselves see the rules as irrational, and some of the questions in the scene are based on the things raised by the original movie enthusiasts.

At one point in the film, Dante attempted to engage his audience in the story by making it appear as if gremlins had mastered the theater where Gremlins 2 was being displayed. The film strip seems to be broken by gremlins, who then engage in shadow puppets above the white screen before replacing the reel with the nudie vintage movie Volleyball Holiday . Hulk Hogan then made a cameo appearance as a member of the audience and intimidated gremlins to run the rest of Gremlins 2 . This joke was inspired by a similar action in the movie William Castle The Tingler (1959). The studio was worried that people would leave the theater if they thought the movie was broken; Therefore Dante ensured the entry of the sequence by gathering several people for a movie preview. When the scene is shown, real-life audiences find it fun and live in the theater. Dante later described this scene as one of the most enjoyed jokes at Gremlins 2 . When the film debuted on home video, the filmmakers replaced the scene, to make it look as if the VCR of the audience had been damaged by gremlins. In this version, gremlins perform their shadow puppets above white noise before changing the VCR channel. Their antics stopped at Chisum broadcasts, where John Wayne forced gremlins to continue filming, although sound imitation was necessary since Wayne had died since 1979; actor Chad Everett was recommended by Wayne Patrick Wayne's son. In particular, a clip of Falling Hare, a 1943 film featuring Bugs Bunny and gremlin, appears in this version. This sequence occurs in place of the Hulk Hogan sequence which also features Paul Bartel; home video viewers will not see this sequence until the DVD release (which includes a reworked VHS scene as a bonus feature).

The original version of the film was longer, but executive producer Steven Spielberg claimed that there were too many gremlins, and some scenes were cut off as a result. One deleted scene depicts three main gremlins, Daffy, Lenny, and George, sneaking into Grandpa Fred's television studio and "helping" his host, acting on the premise that Fred's grandfather's show meant to be frightening (though this scene is later). included in the novel tie-in).

Casting

Several actors from the original film went back to create Gremlins 2 , including Galligan, Cates, and Dick Miller. Miller changed his role as Billy's neighbor, Mr. Futterman, whose gremlins were deeply wounded (both physically and mentally) in the first film, in an expanded role in the film. Secondly, he plays a part in wiping out the creatures by watering them with cement and using fire hoses against others. Character actress Jackie Joseph returns to play the wife of Mr. Futterman, and there is also a brief appearance in the cinema sequence of Belinda Balaski as the complaining mother and Kenneth Tobey as the projection. Keye Luke also returns to play Mr. Wing, the original owner of Gizmo. When Luke heard his character die in Gremlins 2, he said, "Remember, when you made Gremlins 3 , I was a flashback!". Hoyt Axton intended to return as Billy's father, the inventor. He will appear at the end of the film, after designing a special outfit for Gizmo that will ensure Gizmo will never come in contact with water again. At the last moment, the filmmakers decided not to take pictures to reduce the time.

New players include Robert Picardo, who previously worked with Dante and producer Michael Finnell in films such as The Howling (1981). He plays Forster, one of Billy's cruel bosses. Robert Prosky plays Grandfather Fred, a television host, and his character is based on the character of Al Lewis, Grandpa Munster. Joe Dante has a brief cameo as director of the show's Grandfather Fred. John Glover plays Clamp (a character based on Donald Trump and Ted Turner) and brings to the role of an enthusiastic innocence that puts aside the fact that his character has been written as a villain, which Dante thought lightened film in general.

Christopher Lee (who previously worked with Spielberg at 1941 ) acted as a mad scientist. Catheter. Lee imagined his role as a light heart; but Dante encouraged him to describe the scientist as a crime to better suit the atmosphere in the laboratory. Lee was honored on set for his experience. In a deleted scene, Dr. The catheter examines bats that are injected with "sun-block genetics". He then said to his colleague, "I was told that they sometimes eat blood"; this is a reference to Lee's appearance as Count Dracula in the movie Hammer Horror . Then, when Bat Gremlin changed, Dr. Catheter experienced Deja-vu (audience heard Dracula music).

Special effects

For special effects, original films rely on Chris Walas, who moved to pursue a directing career. Dante turned to Academy Award winner Rick Baker to create an effect for Gremlins 2 . Baker was not interested, because he saw Gremlins 2 as too much work for a project in which he would not be a creator but rather as a Walas replacement. He was eventually persuaded to accept a job when it was suggested he could make gremlins and mogwai more diverse.

In the first film, when Gizmo is multiplied, his off-spring is very similar to himself, except for the leader, the Stripe. Here, the four mogwai Gizmo produce each have different personalities and physical characteristics. In addition, every mogwai has a name, even though the names are used in the script and never spoken clearly in the movie. Two of the mogwais are George, the black without lines and the caricature of Edward G. Robinson, and Lenny, the large toothed, named for the main character in the Of Mice and Men , which they resemble in both. appearance and attitude. Daffy is named for his maniac behavior, and leader, Mohawk, for his mohawk hairstyles. Based on the original movie character, Stripe, Frank Welker also voiced Mohawk. While the mogwai and gremlin versions of the Stripe had fur stripes, Baker found the idea of giving Mohawk mogwai the fur line and giving Mohawk gremlin something sharper. Gizmo is also redesigned; dolls are generally larger and the design is simplified. Dante comments Gizmo may look less real in Gremlins 2, but the result is that Gizmo can deliver more emotion.

Later, when mogwai metamorphosed into gremlins and multiplied, they diversified further by doing amok in the bio-laboratory and digesting various drugs. One turns into a sun-proof hybrid with a bat, so it becomes Bat Gremlin. Mohawk became part of the spider. One becomes a vegetable part (Vegetable Gremlin, as Dante names it), and the other takes the drug and transforms into a female gremlin, called in at least one script as "Girl Gremlin" and in official trade cards and other promotional series. ingredients as "Lady Gremlina" with glossy red lips and mascara. Others have acid thrown at his face, quickly displaying the Phantom of the Opera mask.

Similar to the first, puppets are involved, and some dolls are mechanical. An actor holding a doll must have a cable attached to it. Gremlins 2 also includes more stop motion animations than the first movie; Bat Gremlin is depicted through several stop motion animations. Film technology since the original has increased, and as a result creatures can be seen walking more. Gizmo is capable of dancing, although this scene is the longest made. Since there are more gremlins in Gremlins 2 than the original, the additional shooting lasts for five months. Many of the effects must be solved after the actors complete their work.

For the Gremlins voice, Howie Mandel returns as Gizmo's voice, while Tony Randall gives Brain Gremlin's voice, Frank Welker gives a voice to Mohawk, Mark Dodson gives voice to George, Lenny, and Daffy, Joe Dante gives voice to Beanie Gremlin and Witch Gremlin, Nancy McConnor voted for Bat Gremlin, while Kirk Thatcher voted for most of the Gremlins, along with Welker.

Music

Like the first movie, the music on Gremlins 2 was composed and performed by Jerry Goldsmith, who also had a cameo in the movie with his wife. In the second half of the film, Gizmo, inspired by Rambo films and tired of the abuse he has suffered at the hands of gremlins, takes revenge on Mohawk. Gizmo shot the Mohawk-gremlin spider with an emergency bow and flashing arrows. For the scene in which Gizmo prepares for this step, Goldsmith - who also writes music in the movie Rambo - uses the Gizmo theme variant in the Rambo style theme. The soundtrack was released August 31, 1990 through VarÃÆ'¨se Sarabande and featured twelve tracks scores at run time in just under forty minutes.

The scene featuring Mohawk turned into a spider-like monster featured part of the song "Angel of Death" by the Slayer thrash metal band. In another scene, Brain Gremlin leads hundreds of gremlins to sing "New York, New York". Dante claims that "The music number is a shameless stealing" from the movie Dames (1934).

Reception

Film critics vary in their review of Gremlins 2 . Roger Ebert, who had approved the first film, observed that Gremlins 2 meant to quip the sequel. Nevertheless, he felt it was not able to distinguish himself from the original and not that good. He went on to claim that the film did not have a well-constructed plot, and as soon as the Gremlins arrived, the film was just a "series of jokes." He gave the film two and a half stars, out of a possible four. Hal Hinson of The Washington Post understood how the animated Looney Tunes was meant to imply "anarchic intelligence," but somehow felt the cartoon was short and the film itself was a failure.. He sees the start too slowly and, like Ebert, thinks the movie is too similar to the first. Hinson, however, approved the characterization of gremlins and their version of "New York, New York." He also noted that changing gremlins against Clamp resembles the anti-corporate "poetic justice".

Conversely, while one reviewer for Films in Review, like Ebert, argues that the film resembles the original and leaves the story when gremlins arrive, he also feels the movie's attractiveness can be found partly in its own right. awareness of these facts and in-jokes and satire. He also praised Cates as "very bewitching," and Galligan as "a naive foil worthy of a scaly demon." Desson Howe of The Washington Post also approved the film, including its special effects and the parody of Trump, Turner, genetic lab, cable television, and the Marathon Man film . Some critics think this film has a quality that is less owned, such as intelligence. A critic for the National Review calls the film "much more free and funnier than the first," though he feels his sequel away from being an essential part of the satire. The cover of the edition of Entertainment Weekly in July 1990 also exclaimed that "actor John Glover... and director Joe Dante made Gremlins 2 wittier, better, and more subversive than original. " Some critics who found the first movie too dark also gave the more positive Gremlins 2 reviews. Leonard Maltin, who appeared in the film, gave it three of four stars for reference to other films, Glover's clone of Turner and Trump, and Lee's performance. Golden Retriever VideoHound film delivers a three and a half bone film of four as opposed to three bones given to the original, stating:

An Allmovie critic praised the sequel by saying "genuine violence and honesty have been lost, making this follow-up somewhat more child-friendly." The film was nominated for several Saturn Awards, namely for Best Director, Best Fantasy Movie, Best Music, and Best Special Effect. Glover and Picardo are both nominated for Best Supporting Actor award.

Even so, the film did not perform well at the box office. This trailer introduces the film to the audience by displaying the water surface interspersed with scenes from the original. A narrator discusses rules on how to safely handle mogwai. After the narrator says, "You are not listening [the rules]," the scene of the sequel is shown, revealing the gremlins turn into a strange new creature and then ending up with Brain Gremlin speaking. Gremlins 2 was released to US theaters on June 15, 1990, the same day as Dick Tracy . On the first weekend, $ 9702,804, and finally earned $ 41,482,207. Therefore, the film is only the thirty-first year's biggest movie, behind several other movies in the comedy, horror or fantasy genre, such as Back to the Future Part III ($ 87.727.583), > Edward Scissorhands ($ 56,362,352), and Arachnophobia ($ 53,208,180). That, however, outperformed Predator 2 ($ 30,669,413), Child's Play 2 ($ 28,501,605) and The Exorcist III ($ 26,098,824).

Gremlins 2 also plays in other countries. Canadian audiences reportedly enjoyed a scene in which Billy and his boss met at a Canadian-themed restaurant, where waiters dressed as Canadian Mounted Police. The film was released in Norway on July 5, Finland on July 6, Colombia on July 12, and most of Europe at the end of July, including in the United Kingdom and Spain on 27 July. Opened in France and Argentina in August and arrives in Australia on September 20th. It generated £ 7.4 million in the UK. Later, the film earned an additional $ 20.8 million in the rental store.

In 2015, the comedy duo Key & amp; Peele spoofed Gremlins 2 with a sketch of what the writer's space for the movie would look like.

Merchandising

Just like the first movie, merchandising is accompanied by Gremlins 2 . This may be an integral part of the film's purpose. As one critic wrote, "This is an ingenious, off-the-wall comedy that confesses, yes, that's just another silly sequel, produced to sell merchandises inspired by the first film." One reference that the film made to the original, an allusion to merchandising around Gizmo, invited criticism. Some critics see the mention of merchandise as bland. This type of product placement has since become more common.

New merchandise released next to the film includes PVC, luxury, and other collections by the Believed company that now died in 1990. Many later, the action figures by the National Entertainment Collectibles Association (NECA Toys) based on characters such as Brain and Mohawk Gremlins was released. NECA also released mogwais and gremlins from the movie at the end of 2011 and 2012; there will be a mogwai and gremlin version of Daffy, Lenny and George, as well as a mogwai version of Mohawk. Electric gremlin, gremlin flasher and Phantom of the Opera gremlin will also be released in the form of action figure by NECA. There is also the latest version of Gizmo released, including its Rambo look. Greta, a new version of Mohawk and Mohawk in Spider form is also being planned for the future.

There is also a children's book like Gremlins 2: The New Batch: Movie Storybook , by Michael Teitelbaum, published by Goldencraft in December 1990. Small Gold Book published Gremlins 2: The New Batch: Gizmo to Rescue in July 1990. In Great Britain, William Heinemann Ltd. has published two tie drawing books from Buzz Books in August 1990 containing photos and scenes taken from the film. They are titled Do not Get Wet and Midnight Feast . Buzz Books has also released another picture book that is perfect for kids like Thomas the Tank Engine & amp; Friends , Fireman Sam , TUGS , The Flintstones , The Animals of Farthing Wood , Looney Tunes , Bugs Bunny , Joshua Jones and Rupert . David Bischoff wrote a novel based on a film published by Avon Books in June 1990. The unique aspect of this novel is how Bischoff adjusts the order in which the film breaks. In the novel, Brain Gremlin subdued and locked Bischoff in his bathroom before taking control a bit to explain that Gremlins took over at this point in the film, his displeasure at Bischoff using the nickname "Mr. Glasses" instead of his official name, and starting his treatise on politics before Bischoff broke the way came out of the bathroom with an ax and subjected Brain Gremlin. The novel then continues where the film was taken after the film broke out.

The Spanish company, Topo Soft developed the scroll side of Gremlins 2: The New Batch video game for Amiga, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, MSX, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum, distributed by Erbe Software in Spain and by Elite abroad, became the first time the Spanish video game company got an exclusive license from a Hollywood movie to create a videogame. Hi-Tech Expressions also released the DOS game at about the same time, but it was not well received. Sunsoft released versions for Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy in 1990.

Reboot/sequel

In January 2013, Vulture reports that Warner Bros. is negotiating with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment to restart the Gremlins franchise. Seth Grahame-Smith was tapped for production, alongside David Katzenberg. However, Grahame-Smith has since declared that the project has been postponed. In November 2015 Zach Galligan insists that the third movie will be a sequel and not a reboot.

In a December 2016 interview with Bleeding Cool, Galligan once again talked about a third movie that said "Warner Bros would want it, Chris Columbus wants to do it because he wants to cancel Gremlins 2 because he is not happy with it, and Spielberg wants to do it, I imagine - because he is Spielberg - and why he does not want to do it. "He says that Columbus now controls the franchise and once confirms that there will be no remakes or reboots, just sequels. He also said that Columbus "has been aggressively working on Gremlins 3 " and Columbus even goes into some details about what will be the third movie. Gremlins 3 takes place today. He excitedly said there will be some new characters and some old characters - I think in the style of the sequel type Force Awakens . One thing we know for sure is they have an author. The only insights I can give are as follows: There is a distance of 6 years between Gremlins and Gremlins 2 ; most of the time it's spent with them writing and rejecting ideas and rewriting. One of the rejected ideas is 'gremlins in Vegas'. They went with it for 18 months and felt it was too expensive. Eventually they came up with the idea of a tower, where I basically worked for Donald Trump, our new President! It takes six years to happen. Carl Ellsworth seems to have been working on the script for a year and a half now. "It is not known if Joe Dante will return to direct the third movie.

In an interview with /Movie in 2017, the script was written by Chris Columbus. The script explores an idea that has long been in the minds of fans: "If all the gremlins come from getting wet Gizmo and feeding his mogwai offspring after midnight, should Gizmo be eliminated?" He describes his manuscript as "crooked and dark".
