Plot
Clary goes to the club with her best friend, Simon Lewis, where she sees a blue-haired boy and a black-haired girl sneaking into a shed, chased by two other boys; one armed with what looked like a knife. He sent Simon to ask for help and he followed the group into the barn, where he watched the blue-haired "kid" being killed; where he disappears from the room, with the explanation that demons "return to the dimensions of their homes when they die." Simon enters the storeroom with a bouncer and asks why he is there alone; and realizing no one else could see the other, he raved apologies.
When he came home, his mother, Jocelyn, chided him for being late. The next day, Jocelyn announced that they had moved from New York City to the country for the summer where Jocelyn's best friend, Luke, had a home. Clary, annoyed by the unexpected movement, confessed to Simon that she knew almost nothing about her mother or her entire family. Simon mentions seeing thin and white scars on Jocelyn's back and shoulders, but Clary rejects this. They went to a poetry reading where Clary saw Jace, one of the boys from the night before, who personally told Clary about a demon hunter, called Shadowhunter or Nephilim, and claimed Clary was not an ordinary man. Clary answers a call from Jocelyn, who frantically warns her not to go home and tells Luke that "she" has found him. The call ended abruptly.
After failing to call, Clary returns to her house and finds it a mess, and her mother leaves. He was attacked by another demon, whom he killed with the Jace Sensor; and Jace took Clary to the "Institute": the local Shadowhunter headquarters, where he was introduced to two other hunters, Isabelle and Alec, and the tutor, Hodge. Jace and Clary return to Clary's house and meet her neighbor, Madame Dorothea, who has a teleportation portal. To find her mother, Clary, followed by Jace, hurry through the portal, and they land in Luke's book shop and find Simon, looking for Clary. Three plots in the shop. Luke returns with two men, Pangborn and Blackwell, whom Valentine sends to interrogate Luke about the Mortal Cup: a talisman sought by both sides. Luke claims ignorance about where Jocelyn hides the Mortal Cup, and refuses to negotiate with them or disrupt Valentine's plans.
Clary and Jace, accompanied by Simon, tell Hodge what they learned, and Hodge tells them about the Circle: a group of Shadow Hunters who set up Valentine to wipe out all Downworlder (vampires, werewolves, faeries, warlocks, etc.), which Jocelyn, Valentine's wife, was forced to join.
Clary and Jace go to Silent City to speak with Silent Brothers, who tells them that a block in his mind prevents him from remembering the Shadow World; itself placed by a magician named Magnus Bane.
While Isabelle had been given an invitation to a party hosted by Magnus. At the party, Clary meets Magnus, who says his spell is too complicated to erase but will fade naturally if it's not re-enforced every year, and placed on Jocelyn's orders for Clary's protection. During the party, Simon ignores Isabelle's warning and drinks the blue liquid that turns him into a mouse. Vampires took him away thinking Simon was one of their own; but Clary and Jace rescue her, and return her to human form. That night, Jace took Clary to the Institute greenhouse at a midnight picnic to celebrate Clary's sixteenth birthday, in which Jace then kissed her.
A secret association responsible for tracking, capturing and eliminating all devils. This particular group is a combination of Blood Raziel's blood and human blood, also known as the Nephilim, which allows them to use angel knives and draw runes onto their skin with love and honor.

References to other works
In the novel, Cassandra Clare includes a reference to the works of Holly Black, who is Clare's friend.
- At the beginning of the book, Clary drew and listened to a band called Stepping Razor. Stepping Razor is the name of the band Ellen Fierch in Holly Black, Tithe: A Modern Faerie Tale .
- In the scene in Chapter 10 where Clary and Jace were riding the train, Clary looked out the window and saw some homeless teenagers. One of them is a girl with a shaved head, another a boy with dreadlocks and piercings that look blind in one eye. These teenagers are actually the characters Valerie and Luis from Black Valiant: A Modern Tale of Faerie .
He also included references to the works of Philip Reeve, who worked Mortal Engines and Infernal Devices he got inspired from. The inclusion of Valentine antagonist, who was later revealed to be Clary's father, was nodding to the antagonist Philip Reeve in Mortal Engines of the same name, who was also found to be the father of one of the main characters.
